Subject: Re: Converting using Device Links
A question for anyone who may be able to answer:
How is it that there is an AppleScript out there (called "Convert File Using Device Link") that converts images using device links, but there is no way to do that in Photoshop?
I may be missing something here, but that seems to me like a most peculiar omission in what is undoubtedly meant to be a professional-level application (not to mention the inability to preserve the black channel and/or channel purity in CMYK-to-CMYK profile conversions, and other annoyances that are beyond the scope of this message).
Hi Joseph Normally when using Device Links, Black will get the % from the CMYK profile you're converting TO. A typical scenario might have you taking a CMYK image that was separated for ISO type 1 with 320% TAC, say 80K, but you require a newspaper ad with 240% TAC and 90K. The K % will be set during the profile creation stage and will factor in TAC, GCR, etc. Device Links can be used for several purposes such as inkjet proofing and for converting RGB images to CMYK. However some clever applications preserve the Black's characteristics. This is especially useful for advertising, where they may want a certain effect such as a solid black or a mono image.
