Kevin,
You mention "dot-based" proofer.
Are you looking for a half-tone proofer that can proof bit-mapped files
out of a professional RIP?
If you mean "half-tone" are you eliminating stochastic screened ink-jet
proofers?
You mention "assigning" the profile for your proofer to your file. This
is not the normal procedure. If you are proofing a contone file you
assign the "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)v2" profile to that file. The custom
profile for your proofer is selected in the output software, be it
Photoshop, a RIP, or a printer driver.
I would need more information to understand exactly what you are trying
to do. Can you give me your software workflow.

P.S. The mention of "denstometric" proofer also is somewhat puzzling.
If you are using a ink jet proofer that uses inks different from your
printing inks, matching density will not cause the color to match.

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding the best SWOP dot-
based, densitometric proofer on the market today?
When I say 'best', I am judging the proofers ability to output a
'U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)v2.icc' separated file without need for
additional color management/correction.
To put it another way, if I were to profile the proofer and assign
that profile to an image separated into 'U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)v2' or
'SWOP2006_Coated5_PERFX.icc', the 'best' proofer would show little or
no color shift.
Thanks!
