In regards to tolerances, there's a few things to consider. One is
proofer *calibration* tolerance and the other is dE tolerance to a
specification such as Fogra27 and ISO 12647-2. Calibration tolerance
should be MUCH tighter than the pass/fail tolerance to a
specification. I would think calibration tolerance should be <1dE
average and perhaps 3 dE peak while tolerance to a specification
should be more like 3 dE average and 5 dE peak.

That's good advice Terry - so I'm back to the calibration of the proofer to
see if I can tighten that up a bit.
There are also tolerances for paper dE and primaries dE - what are your
recommendations for these?

Paper should be < 1 dE in my opinion. When shopping for proofing media, my advice would be to find a supplier/vendor that will GUARANTEE < 1 dE from roll-to-roll or they will replace the roll. Of course, you will need to have a system in place to monitor this. Easiest thing is to get yourself proof verification software (Monaco QCcolor Desktop is what I most often recommend to my clients) and then start monitoring your proof output.

As far as primaries, the "official" dE tolerance for ISO is 5 dE (dE76 or dE(ab)) but I would be more comfortable with < 3 dE if your looking to do high quality proofing. Calibration tolerance should be lower than that (<2?) in my opinion.

Terry Wyse
