BasICColor v4 and ColorEyes Display are my two favorites. Great for
controlling a monitor with built-in hardware LUT like the Eizo's. Support
for a wide range of instruments is included. Relatively inexpensive (under
$200). Fast. Completely automated, if desired. Both programs are at the
mercy of instruments though, like any calibrating and profiling apps. If the
instruments are off, the software has no way to tell that the values
returned are off and therefore the visual appearance of colors will suffer.
Gradations are smooth with no visual banding. L* or gamma perform equally
well in my testing. It's still an active area of research and development.
