I worked with the Roland FJ500 and the same ink set and used the
ColorBurst Prepress RIP, which handles the 8 colors quite well, and
allowed one to apply curves to each of the colors. It also allows
the creation of custom spot color values.
My objective was to create a hifi (or Hexachrome) profile with a 4
color press as the source, and then use the expanded proofer gamut to
create better Pantone matches. I would enter in the lab values from
Gretag Macbeth's Colorpicker, having assigned to the application the
hifi profile, into the custom spot color table in Colorburst. It
seemed crazy but it just might work.
The reality was that I was never able to get a proofer gamut that was
any better than what I was getting from a Sherpa43 CMYKcm. I tried
various papers and Pantone Vantage inks. I used ProfileMaker with
the multicolor plug-in for the hifi profile.
When I looked at canned profiles, they were not any better.
So my point is, is it possible to get a good hexachrome profile off
of the Roland HiFi, as compared to a press set up for hexachrome? If
it is the fact that it is not possible, that would relieve me of
being the source of the failure.

In looking over the comments on rips, I'd like some input on my
situation, which is printing fine art on a Roland FJ500, running
CMYKLcLmOrGr Roland pigment ink sets. For the past 5 years or so
I've been using the ScanvecAmiable Photoprint rip, with the
additional color profiler, and have had good results in profiling
the Bulldog canvas, and Hahnemuhle papers that I use, especially in
version 3. I upgraded to version 4 a little over a year ago, and
the profiling in that version is a disaster when it comes to
Hexachrome ink sets. They've been very helpful, and have tried to
create profiles for me, but the results are no better than what I
was able to do, which wasn't even close. Version 4 is supposed to
work with 3rd party profilers(I have MonacoProfiler Platinum), but
again, when it comes to hexachrome, it's impossible.
I've been told by someone I trust with this issue at Scanvec that
the new version 5 of Photoprint still can't handle the Or & Gr in
profiling, either with it's own Color Profiler, which I have, or
with a 3rd party prifiler, but an update in the next month or so
should resolve it.
So, what I'm after is a rip that will be used for fine art
printing, can handle 3rd party media, works with a Hexachrome ink
set, and will allow me to Linearize in the rip, the print my
characterization patches through Monaco, and create the profile in
Monaco. Obviously, the rip would also have to accept profiles
created in Monaco.
I use a DTP41UV to read my patches with.
From what I've seen and heard, it seems that this Hexachrome
profiling and printing is a quirky endeavor, with varying methods
of how the rips actually handle the extra colors. There aren't even
any classes offered that I know of on how to properly do it. I just
want a rip that'll give me the best product for a reasonable cost.
Otherwise, I just hold my breath in hopes that Scanvec does come up
with a fix.
