Would you think that printing and measuring 3 copies of the patches and
averaging the results serve to sufficiently smooth both device variance and
measurement variance?
I can't speak from experience on this aspect, but I can give you my
best guesses.
If the profiling system does not apply an appropriate level of smooth
filtering to data, or the device & instrument add a noticeable level
of uncertainty into the readings, then averaging a number of prints
& readings of the same patch values may well give an improved accuracy
result.
If an appropriate level of smooth filtering _is_ being applied, or the
inherent repeatability and accuracy of the device and instrument are
high, then it might be better use of that number of patches to expand
the patch distribution by a factor of 3, giving more detail as well as
more readings.
