I was referring to profiles like the list below:
U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2
U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
Europe ISo Coated FOGRA 27
To some extent what is required depends on the market segment. The
Publications (SWOP) and the Packaging (FAST) industry want tight
standards so that they can have their products printed at multiple
locations. They want to separate to standards and have all printing
look the same no matter where it is printed. Commercial printers have
always relied more on a personal relationship with their clients. They
have always tried to differentiate themselves from their competition.
With the advent of desktop publishing, many clients want to work to
standards and then send the job out over the net for competitive
quotes. Of course this turns it into a commodity. Most printers do not
want to see this.
