Problem solved by my second hunch. I moved Artisan Startup from within the Artisan.app package, and placed it in the same folder and level as Artisan.app. Both still run fine, and either or both can be installed as a startup item without damaging loginwindow.plist.
Now my question is: If I run Artisan.app as a startup item, is there any need to also run Artisan Startup.app, or is Artisan Startup.app merely a faceless application that can be abandoned if Artisan, app is opened instead?
