Interesting. In that light, after sending the same email I sent to this list to Sony support, I got the following message:
"We are sorry to learn of the difficulty you are experiencing. The resolution of the issue depends on the model number of the VAIO computer or Sony monitor. To see the detailed graphic images and instructions to locate the model number of your VAIO computer, please click on the link below: ..."
Clueless, or what?
At any rate, I had the idea to see what would happen if I set loginwindow.plist to root ownership. Then when I launched Artisan, I get an actual crash message that incudes:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000004
Thread 0 Crashed:
0 Artisan 0x000438e0 RegisterStartupApp() + 564 (RegisterStartupApp.cpp:65)
So the RegisterStartupApp() call seems to be a factor, though Googling it on the Web or within the Apple Developer site gives no results for me.
Andrew, in response to your query, I reinstalled and removed prefs several times AFTER installing Tiger, and again after upgrading to 10.4.4. Do you have a contact person in the Artisan group that I might be able to check in with directly, avoiding the Sony basic tech support Neanderthals?
Now, I think I'll try going through this all again with a newly created user. Oy! Or see what happens if I pull Artisan Startup out of the application package, and run it separately.
