I'm taking a blind stab here:
This category of device doesn't "read" sampled material directly -
with all the attendant tonal variability a heavy texture could impart
- but relies on an "integrated" input signal to negate potential
texture-induced effects.
My experience is limited to Digital Swatchbook and DTP-41 devices
though there Was a Colortron II way back when ....
