I disagree wholeheartedly. TAG THE FILES.

Since all of Adobe's software offerings require a source profile
(expressed or assumed), doesn't it make sense to supply the correct
one?

Read this interesting article by Dan Margulis commenting on exactly this
question:
http://tinyurl.com/cywmo

(I don't know what to think.)

Well, my first conclusion is that the author has had some bad experiences with printing.

But...

doesn't change a thing. The first problem image he shows is the result of someone assuming an incorrect source profile. By leaving files untagged you force those downstream to assume incorrect source profiles.

Finally, he resolves problems in the last image by assuming an incorrect source profile. And, interestingly enough, in both cases it's the same incorrect profile - sRGB

What the author didn't touch on is that any of the situations described require the selection of an appropriate destination color space.

Submission of untagged CMYK files is the workflow that made color management necessary.
