Jon - just a suggestion:
1. Make sure to distinguish in your post between 16 bit per color data, and
16 bit data (usually 5 bit per color) I know you know this, but some of the
readers may not.
2. We have to distinguish between two very different things: whether higher
bit depth data is being used internally on the video card for smoothing
lookup tables to 8 bit color, or whether it is truly being used for display.
I get the impression from reading the Avivo white paper that it is being
used to smooth lookup tables for 8 bit per color output.

Just a heads up that the pipeline is moving toward 16 bit. ATI released the
Avivo card. A bit of light reading:

Avivo_Whitepaper.pdf
In addition, Brightside has a true 16 bit display:

Cameras are offering 16 and 32 bit support as does Photoshop CS2
I have been working with 32 bit technology for over 3 years:

In summary - the discussion regarding gamut, accuracy and technology is
converging on higher bit support more quickly via the PC platform.
I would presume that Mr. Jobs is working to make sure his graphics support
is competitive. Any MacWorld details?
