The digital workflow has no doubt made it easier for us all to
produce the work faster however we, especially as digital
photography is now the norm, have lost the colour accountability
during the process.
Only if you are foolish enough to forgo a contract proof. I don¹t
see how that isn¹t still the case with a digital workflow.
Then indeed, the "digital workflow" is a "fool's paradise". I imagine
you'd be very surprised at some of the practices that are commonplace
"in the trenches".
The problem we are all in is that we are working under such tight
lead times that photographers supplying hard copy proofs to design
agencies just may not be practical.
Why not? Is this impractical for all photographers?
It's no worse than the mindset of, "We'll just adjust it on press."
Or how about this one, "Ok with corrections."
In the UK there is a move for images to be supplied in adobe rgb
(1998) or cmyk with ISO coated profile
Might work on this side of the pond if printers actually conformed
to what they say they do. Over here, the line is "we print SWOP."
It really doesn't matter what colorspace you work in (or for that
matter what colorspace I print in). Just tag the image appropriately
and I will convert it to maintain the appearance. For what it's worth
I like the ECI-RGB for print purposes. Also, check with the printer —
they may have custom profiles available. Take a look at their web
site. Why not make that a criterion for who you're gonna' do business
with?
