Hi, Jim.
A Delta E of 2.9 is neither necessarily high nor very high per se, in my
opinion, specially if it is the peak value in only a small number of the
patches. Obviously, that determination also depends on the aim point and the
tolerance one can allow for.
On how many of the patches do you get that kind of Delta E value? On most of
them or, say, in 10%, 5% or less?
Which flavor of Delta E are you using for that computation?
And which procedure are you using to determine those Delta E values?

Does the posterization occur in the color range(s) in which the Delta E is
highest? Or does it show throughout?

Now, this is important: Are you allowing for a healthy drydown time (3 hours
or so) before you measure the printed test charts with your
spectrophotometer? Dyes are notorious for how much they drift before they
settle, which takes a few hours (opinions diverge on whether it's 3, 4, or
more).
If you read the test charts with your spectro prematurely (i.e., before they
have had a chance to "settle"), that may account for a good deal of the
problems you are experiencing.

You mean that the RIP is defining a maximum of 260% total ink, I presume.

"No GCR" means "CMY only", and 0% Black.
Incidentally, which profiling software do you use?
How many black cartridges are in your printer? One, or two ("light black"
added), or more?

So, if all other possible factors are ruled out (see above), then the
trouble is in the way black is being generated? I would like to know what
other people on this forum think.
Best regards.
