Re. monitors,  I think that for people with space to burn, the best
monitor is simply a CRT, used exclusively for pictures. LCD choices
are all problematic and/or expensive. They're sharp, and they save
your eyes, but they don't really show you what's going on in the
shadows.

In the past I got my clients to buy the end-of-stock LaCie CRTs rather
than cheaper LCDs.

Maybe ebay is an undervalued resource ?
