I was trying to pick up information on how to produce a CMYK profile for
a HP5500 PS lately.
I've got now some feedback on what came out. The bad news is that I
wasn't able to produce a CMYK profile for the printer. The good news is
that I could produce a satisfactory RGB profile for it. In fact I
learned that the printer is defined by HP as an RGB printer set for sRGB
space. It is of course capable of printing SWOP CMYK in it's PostScript
version. But here are a few hints on how I got there.
First, there is a color calibration process for the machine itself that
has to be commanded manually. It doesn't take place automatically when
the toner is replaced.
Once done, and this produced noticeable change, I printed a 720 patches
chart from Photoshop using no color management. The printer advanced
options were set on sRGB space (there is a place to switch between sRGB
and Peripheral, but Peripheral–untouched?– didn't produce a good profile
even if I thought it should). I set a paper choice close to the ones I
was using and printed. The first set of profiles that came out using
ProfilerPro were too bluish. Then I thought of measuring the paper white
with the Spectrocam before reading the patches, there was obviously a
whitener in it, and the second set were actually quite good considering
it is a laser printer. Used in conjunction with the same paper setting
and printer set to sRGB space, the results are probably as close as one
can get with a laser printer, which is encouraging.
Thanking you who helped me to get there!
