Measure Tool supplies a few sample curves and they have a very uniform (smooth) shape. The curves for my press CMYK when compared to the sample curves are very "wavy" with bumps and valleys (real technical, I know). Does this make the profile "work harder" to create a good proof?
indeed, it does exactly that.

Is smoothing out my curve worth my effort, actually not so hard for me to create the curve, just a challenge to get press time to print and test them, or will a proofer be able to match my press profile as is, just as well as if the curve was smoother? Somehow I feel the smoother the curve the better, but I have no facts or any offset profiles I can look at to see how smooth they are.
what I would recommend is working on aiming your printing at some standard print curves. That will both smooth them and make your press behave in a more typical print manner. An effective emerging method for this is the new G7 process. You can get more information about it here:

The G7 methodology is effective for nearly any printing system and has been applied to sheetfed, web, gravure as well as flexo (if I remember correctly).
And yes, the smoother more predictable system makes profiling more accurate and proofs easier to match as well.

Steve
