The Spectrum is the one device I know of that will actually render the actual dot that is in the 1 bit file (albeit perhaps with more or less gain to match a specific dot gain curve) rather than its own interpretation of what the dot should be.

Indeed.
I am a big fan of inkjets, they have come a long way in

I agree that it still makes sense in some cases, such as the above, to have a legitimate dot proof. Of course in these cases, there is also the option of printing FM and all the moiré issues associated with image content and screening are no longer an issue, then you can have whatever proof you want, though I understand that this is a lot easier said than done.
