Jon,

Here are two suggestions.

One is to try printing a test through the Epson driver just to see if the rip or the printer is causing the banding.

Two use Colortuner to smooth the graident. I have seen the this rip that the smoothing is essential for smooth gradient. There is no easy fix, so  you will have to take the time to test various settings and then start using them in production.
