In Chapter 9 of the 2003 issue of Real World Color Management, you
spend considerable amount of pages showing an input profile
evaluation technique using a Greytag-MacBeth freeware application
called 'ColorLab'. I recently downloaded the freeware app and have
found it radically updated for OSX (the 2003 RWCM shows screen shots
of an OS9 version). In short, I can't really make heads or tails of
it.
I don't remember there being sweeping changes to the OSX version. Not
being able to make heads or tails of it is an ongoing feature of
ColorLab!
Is it worth my while to buy the latest edition of RWCM in (assuming
the same technique is explained for the OSX version of ColorLab) or
would a visual examination of the GrangerRainbow be the most
practical way to go. The 'ColorLab' eval proceedure appears
exhausting!
The latest version of RWCM does refer to the OS X version in all its
screen shots, but they're not very different from the Classic ones. I
always start with a visual examination. The ColorLab procedure is
detailed, but doable. It does provide a lot of info.
ColorThink Pro is a better solution, but it's not free (nor should it be!)
