FYI, at the Getty Museum we had much better results profiling a big scanning camera (more like an open frame flatbed, really) with the HCT Precision target than others we tried. I believe we used ProfileMaker 5.

I have two thoughts:
1) I have spent many days at fine art repro shops testing and evaluating different profiling packages and testcharts for profiling input devices (Cruise camears and the like) and feel pretty confident recommending the ColorChecker SG (not the 24 patch original) with ProfileMakerPro5. I love MonacoProfler for output device profiling but think GMB really has them beat for input device profiling. If you don't own PMP, you could email your camera's TIFF file to a remote profiling service to have one of these profiles made.
2) You may not need a custom profile if you are shooting RAW camera files. Input device profiling is really tricky and the very best applications for this process are not available to the public. Have you tried using the ACR Calibrator script with Adobe Camera Raw? http://fors.net/chromoholics/ It takes time to master but I've found the results to be superior in some situations than with custom profiles. Once you have it figured out for your lights and camera the workflow is very efficient. Scott Martin www.on-sight.com |
