this is a classic problem on these machine with OS 9

Check your AppleTalk settings in the Chooser. If AppleTalk is on it might select 'localtalk' as a default which will take over the single serial port.

Either turn Appletalk off or select Ethernet for Appletalk, then you'll probably be OK.
