Exactly correct. And yes, it's useful to see if you should or may not have
to convert to the house profile (how ugly does the soft proof look?).
This isn't necessarily an untagged issue either. InDesign like Photoshop
should use the currently configured RGB or CMYK working space for the
untagged color space assumption. But suppose someone provides a tagged CMYK
file and you want to determine if you should do a CMYK to CMYK conversion or
just send the existing CMYK numbers 'as is' to your device. This option
helps a great deal. You may decide that the current color numbers will
produce acceptable output based on the soft proof.
