When we open same docs on our Calibrated CRT, look on screen matches look on proof and print. But even with a calibrated LCD, image on screen looks much better than it would print on paper. This holds true for all the LCD monitors we have tested. Even with the lowest brightness setting, LCD is much brighter that paper as it looks.
Any suggestions with LCD monitors? What can we do?
You could lower the contrast setting which will darken the white luminosity without raising the black luminosity. I hate this option (I'm sure others are cringing as they read this) but it does work and of course you will loose some shades of color to get the lower white lumonosity. IMHO, matching display whites to paper whites (both in terms of color and luminosity) are paramount.
Another (and better) option would be to increase the ambient or viewing light to match the LCD's lowest lumonosity.
We've gotten used to working in low ambient environments because of the relatively low white luminance of CRTs and their glare. Of course, you wouldn't want to view a nice painting or photograph under dim lighting. Brighter, high-CRI lighting allows you to percepive and appreciate subtle tonal differences in a nice print. In the same fashion it can be nice to work with brighter LCDs in brighter environments. Of course, distinguishing between ambient and viewing light and adjusting them differently is whole another discussion.
