Hello Greg,
For graphic design applications, the current preferred
formula is CIEDE2000. This is the one that gives numbers
which correlate the most to the perceived difference
(still not perfect but better than older formulas).
An excellent second choice, if CIEDE2000 is not available,
is CIE94. Finally, for simple and fast comparisons, to be
done in a spreadsheet for example, use the good old CIELAB
(in particular if you want to compare the differences to
older data).
