I had a quick talk with Thomas Knoll at Photokina. About ICC
profile-based workflows and their desirability in a Raw converter.
Because of my desire not to hold up the next release of Photoshop by
more than a few minutes, I tried to get out of his way quickly ;)
- I said an ICC-based workflow and the ensuing standardisation might
be beneficial. (read this for saying Sir, I believe that Adobe Raw is
a hack of genius, but still a hack, and it's now time to redo this
cleanly).
- Thomas noted that the ICC model is output-referred (because of PCS
??) while camera input is scene-referred, and therefore ICC profiles
as such don't apply to this situation. Which, although I don't quite
understand it might be a quick way of summarizing Ray's comment.
Of course, my point is organisational not technical: An ICC-type
model allows third parties to create tools like profile editors and
profile generators. Interoperability benefits the user. Maybe an
extension of the ICC model might be desirable ?
