It's a good system.

Not a bad RIP. But you'll have to study its color management implementation.

Very legitimate.

Have you tried that? And what were the results?

Have you investigated what kind of stability they get out of this
calibration?

I once was called by a client to help with this device. I thought it bear a
lot of similarities with EFI color laser RIPs. Perhaps there is a
connection? I did not have the time to finish the project. So, personnally,
I can't help further.

Study the printer gamut and compare it with the press gamut. The two should
correspond in relative size. Also, do experiment with various substrates.
The last I remember from working on that project (and working with color
laser printers in general) is that the selctino of substrates for these
devices was very limited (mostly Hammermill) and very bad, full of optical
brightners. The best I could find, if I memory serves, was a substrate made
by Mohawk called Navajo Digital. It had a b* = -4 to -5, depending with
which instrument I measured it. The best Hammermill had b* = -7 to -9.
Profiling nightmare in perspective.
