Hi Lee There has been a lot of discussion on print sequence at the UK TC130 Technical Advisory Group meetings and on the Printing Across Borders (PAB) Forum. It seems that many sheetded printers in the UK use MCY because of possible trapping problems with M being laid down on top of C, which might cause a mottling in blue-violets. May also be caused by the paper stock. Some printers I have spoken to say it may be a problem on only a very small percentage of jobs. Some don't want to change. I believe if you don't use KCMY or CMYK you are not strictly ISO 128467-2 compliant. Ideally if you use another sequence you should profile to that, and use the profile for image conversions and hard and soft proofing, but that is hardly likely to happen. I've not done a test where the ink order was changed, so I'm not sure what would happen on a print.
I was trying to think what would happen to the Blue overprint - 100% Cyan and Magenta depending on print order.
Initially I thought the second ink laid down would be the most visible. i.e. If magenta was laid on top of cyan, the 'blue' overprint would be more magenta. Then I thought about trapping.... If Cyan is laid on the paper first, then 100% of the ink should adhere to the paper. When Magenta is laid on top, because the ink adheres differently to another ink than to paper (this is what trapping measures), then not all of the Cyan ink is covered by the Magenta, and the overprint looks more Cyan.
Certainly, the blue overprint looked really purple when printed MCY, nothing like our ISO compliant proof, and much more magenta than the blue overprint on other ISO compliant press runs. Lee Badham Bodoni Systems Ltd www.bodoni.co.uk |
