As mentioned previously, all printing devices can reach a peak Dmax/TIL and adding more colorant after that will not increase visual density. Knowing this value optimizes your printing process.

To be sure, there are performance limits regarding TIL in both solids and picture elements, but the solid ink densities for a given inkset and substrate are relevant to print contrast as well. There is a difference between normalizing and optimizing the output of a press and given the opportunity to break the rules, some really incredible printing can be achieved by fooling around with SIDs and TIL. Furthermore, if the natural gain of a press is low, then separations made in accordance with the low gain can also produce impressive printing if the RIP is set to allow the separations to image without compensation.

These practices can't be part of a routine, daily operation, but it is amazing to see how good the printing can be when you get the opportunity to truly optimize.
