Pardon my saying so, but it seems to me a bit of a waste of time and energy
to try to salvage an aging CRT when a more-than-decent LCD can be had for
under $1,000.
For example, a 24" Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP LCD (to remain with the same
manufacturer) will set you back less than $800.
