Saturation intent (at least in ColorVision printer profiles) prioritizes for saturation in remapping out-of-gamut colors. So they may not be a close in brightness or hue as with other intents, but they will map to more saturated options. This only effects colors that can't be reached as defined, that must be remapped to be printed.

I think it's important to emphasize the statement "at least in ColorVision printer profiles" because the actual implementation will likely be somewhat different for each vendor. The following is from the ICC spec (ICC.1:2003-09, section A.4.3):

A.4.3 Saturation Intent
"The exact gamut mapping of the saturation intent is vendor specific and involves compromises such as
trading off preservation of hue in order to preserve the vividness of pure colors. It is useful for images
which contain objects such as charts or diagrams."

The point is not to dispute what CDTobie stated, but to make the point that each profiling package may or may not use the same type of mapping described.
