My understanding is that Perceptual Rendering preserves lightness at the
expense of saturation and hue angle, whereas Saturation rendering preserves
saturation at the expense of lightness and hue accuracy.

I do not understand that to mean that Saturation Rendering *enhances*
saturation, but only to mean that it will work to preserve the fullest
extent possible of the *already existing* saturation of the colors in the
file.
