Hehe Charlie, I'm glad Michael agrees with me ;)
I also reviewed all these things a long time ago, and really liked the
Coloreyes software. It's wonderful for experts and I use it on my
dual head Eizo/Samsung setup.
The software/hardware bundle I recommend to casual users for ease of
use is the Eyeone Display. In the latest versions Gretag have done a
beautiful job on one-click calibration there. The best hardware as far
as colorimeters are concerned would seem to be the Monaco Optix,
leading over the Eyeone Display by a nose.
As you will hopefully never discover, monitor calibration can be a
real headache when you want very close matches, own exotic monitors,
or setup multi-head systems. I hope you won't need to go there.
Please be aware, however that there is just so much quality you can
get from a laptop display, don't expect miracles !

Edmond,
Thanks for the tip. Luminous Landscapes had an excellent review of Coloreyes software.
Michael Reichman really liked it. IMO Spyder 2 is only O.K. I'll definitely try the Coloreyes free download and see what it does.
Thanks for the wonderful tip. It's most appreciated...

A reliable way to solve Spyder problems, I have found with my clients,
is not to use Spyder. I believe that the company which makes
Coloreyes has some software which will drive the hardware, and thereby
allow you to escape from the Spyder software. A fully functional demo
that generates profiles can be downloaded from their site. They also
offer tech support.
