There is (was?) a large-aperture version of the
Spectrolino/Spectroscan, I believe 8mm or so (should be enough!). I
would trust a large aperture more than averaging readings from
small-aperture instruments.
Now, given the relatively low stability/repeatability of these
printers (compared to desktop inkjets), a solution like scanner-based
profiling should be enough.
You could print your chart with large patches (say 1"x1"), scan it by
pieces (as it won't fit into the scanner as a whole) at something like
100dpi and then assemble in Photoshop. Then scale down to real size,
which will average the pixel values inside each patch. And then use a
scanner-based profiling application such as Monaco EZColor.
I've never tried doing this, to be honest, but don't see why it
wouldn't work fine.
