For the sake of this topic I would like to separate the issue of
profiling printers vs monitors.
When I checked out the Optix screen calibrator, I found that you have to
install the software on the computer you wish to calibrate and that you
have to register the software online to use it. You can use it for 14
days without the registration. This means that when you buy this system
you can only calibrate one system (video card and monitor).
I believe that the Gretag EyeOne Display 2 license restricts you to only
one machine as well, however, you do not have to register the software.
Given the current news, I hope that Gretag does not adopt the license
agreement and registration of X-Rite.
If I have misunderstood this license, I am sure someone will correct me.
Now, imagine that you were to buy a micrometer to use in your machine
shop. After you opened it you found that you had to sign a license
agreement that restricted your use of this measuring instrument to use
with only one lathe in your shop. How would you feel? What if a friend
brought in a machined part and ask you to measure it and you said,
"Sorry, if it is not made on my lathe, I cannot measure your part"?
If I buy a measurement system that is used in the calibration and
characterization of my equipment, why should I be restricted to using it
will only one computer and monitor system. Don't the manufactures of
this equipment realize that if I go to a friends house and calibrate and
profile their monitor that they may see the value of this equipment and
want to buy one themselves?
Is it possible for a person who supplies profiling services to calibrate
a monitor for a client and charge for it?
Given the slow penetration of color management into every graphics
designer, print shop, and photographer, why wouldn't the manufactures of
this equipment what as many people as possible exposed to this
technology? I believe that this would increase the demand for their
product.
What are your thoughts?
