Hi Anthony.
My experiences are with the 2200, 2400 and 4800, not the 3800. I've had earlier Epson's like the 1280 too. I mostly use Epson Enhanced Matte, but I also use Hahnemuhle and Legion papers. I profile with MonacoPROFILER and have both a DTP70 and Eye-One.
With the older printers I never used 2880 because it was too slow, and because I could usually see a tiny bit of improvement in my Photoshop images at the 1440 setting over the 2880 setting.
However, with my two 4800 (which are much faster) I am using 2880, mostly because I have found 2880 uses a tiny bit less ink than 1440.
Also, I have always used Bi-Directional printing (High Speed). I have never ever been able to discern an iota of difference with it on or off, although I never bothered to test this with my 4800s. This was always the case with my other printers. I don't understand the warning about using the High Speed setting. I am curious as to the reasoning behind the warning.
For printing & profiling Enhanced Matte and similar papers on my two 4800s, I use 2880, Finest Detail, High Speed and No Color Adjustment.
By the time I get used to the new Epson paper names, I think they will have changed them again! :)
