Terry and Marco,
I think this might be a small technical point about what is being described.
It is my understanding that there are two CIE options for profile connection
spaces with profiles in general. L*a* b* and XYZ.
And if I am understanding your points about L*a*b* and monitor profiles, it
is very common with monitor profiles to use XYZ instead of L*a* b*.
Perhaps any of the ICC developers on this list might want to acknowledge
this one way or another.
