I've mentioned this before, but here for the lists contemplation,
are the results of an informal comparison between various display
measurement instruments that I have access to.

Note that some of the instruments are old, and may have drifted
out of calibration, and that the results are rather dependent
on the spectral characteristics of the display used, so if
a similar experiment was performed with an LCD, the results
might well be different. These results should be taken as an
indication of potential differences, rather than being used to
judge the instruments types themselves I think.

Source was a CRT display.

Test patches were all combinations of 0,50% and 100% of the
RGB primaries, plus 10 values of equal RGB (grey steps).

Each set of measurements was normalized to the white Y value
before comparison.

Instruments are:

i1pro3 Gretag/X-Rite Eye-One Pro, 2 seconds integration time, 3.3 nm spectral readings
i1pro10 Gretag/X-Rite Eye-One Pro, 2 seconds integration time, 10 nm spectral readings
slino Gretag Spectrolino (getting old, but still agrees well with new i1pro)
dtp94 X-Rite DTP94
dtp92 X-Rite DTP92 (rather old)
i1disp Gretag Eye-One Display 2
huey Gretag/X-Rite Huey
spyd2 Datacolor Spyder 2 (I'm not sure if this is a representative result though.)

Numbers are peak and average Delta E in CIEDE2000,
of the cross comparison between each instrument.

                                            2.736 2.753 3.769

i1disp 8.020 12.784
                                                    2.559 4.434

huey 14.270
                                                            5.370

To give an indication of the repeatability of the experiment, for
a couple of instruments here are some results of being compared to
a second set of their own measurements:

i1pro: peak = 1.929443, avg = 0.552507
dtp92: peak = 1.787257, avg = 0.255300

I'm not very confident about the Spyder 2 results - it's entirely
possible that I've messed this up in some way, or that my instrument
is well out of factory calibration for some reason. Without a second
Spyder 2 to check against, I can't be sure.

Graeme Gill.
