Hi All,
Within the debate on the merits etc of the NEC and Sprectraview were some
comments and questions regarding the Samsung XL range.
Before answering any questions, we must declare a direct interest.
Targetcolour has been commissioned by Samsung to become manufacturers
representative for the XL and colour critical display ranges. We shall act
as independent colour advisors, providing testing and support resources to
Samsung in order to better serve the graphics industry. Suffice to say
Samsung are now monitoring this forum and take your comments very seriously.
For the record we have evaluated both the XL 20 and XL 24 monitors and have
found, through extensive tests, both ³Best Practice² methods of calibration
and avenues that must be further explored in order to improve overall
product performance. The bottom line is that this is a very good monitor;
capable of rivalling any other system we have seen claiming wide gamut
colour, at half the price. Testing data and initial results to follow.
The criteria for the evaluation of this product shall focus on its abilities
for soft proofing for the graphics industry. Softproofing to known print
standards to aid the Advertising, Publishing and print marketplace, where we
feel the greatest need exists. Open to other opinions of course.
The first thing we would like to do is to include everyone¹s suggestions in
our testing methods. This is your opportunity as a collective group to shape
how we test and what criteria is important in evaluating any monitor without
fear of a contaminated result or opinion.
- Colour Gamut? How should we display this? Gamut volume?
Graphics?
- Grey balance? L* calibration, Gamma?
- What profiles? LUT? Matrix?
- What testing software? UDACT (UGRA.ch), ColorEyes
(Integrated-color.com, ColorThink from Chromix.com, ColorPursuit from
Alwancolor.com, Xrite Profilemaker Measure tool www.xrite.com)?
- What standards? ISOCoatedv2 (Fogra 39L), Gracol, SWOP,
JAPAN COLOR?
- Uniformity? Acceptable variance and testing methods?
- Inter Instrument interoperability
- Colorimeter or Spectrophotometer? What models?
Next week we will take delivery of five XL30 and five XL24's, these will be
used for extensive testing along side other major brands in the industry.
The results shall be published and access shown on this forum as soon as the
data has been prepared.
