Profiling Press vs. Contract Proof

Yes, it is technically sound but not as sound as using a device-link profile at the proofing device.

I have a client that creates color separations for their Approval XP. They are satisfied with the results on press, but I would prefer device-link profile queues for SWOP, GRACoL, Newsprint, etc. Client pushes back because this is 'complicated' and they believe in the age- old prepress doctrine that 'presses match proofs, proofs do not match presses'. Does it work? Sure. Is it the best way to go? No, not really.

The saving grace of this workflow is that the printers themselves believe it is their responsibility to match the proof, so by sheer muscle power they make it work. Of course, the result would be much better (and the job it would be much easier) if the client separated their files for the press instead of the proofing device but the fact is that 90% of American presses either don't know or don't care about color management. We still have a long way to go to disseminate color management technology/knowledge to the people who need it most.

Short answer, yes. Profile the the proofer if you must. Slightly longer answer, device link the proofer profile to appropriate press condition and let RIP make final color transformation.

The root of my question was not a practical matter, however, rather a technical inquiry: is it a technically sound approach from a colour management perspective to profile a printer's contract proofer for both proofing and separations for press, assuming the printer can match their own proof?
