I've tried both sRGB and Adobe RGB 1998 as source, and SWOP v2 and a custom profile I built with PMP 5 as destination.
I tried the same test with CS2, on a different machine, and got the same results, so I don't think it's related to my monitor profile.
Using BPC for the conversion yields an image that on screen matches the original more closely in terms of darkness than not using BPC, which runs contrary to my expectations and understanding of what BPC does and how Rel Col works.
Maybe there's some aspect to Rel Col or BPC I don't understand, or maybe I'm just going crazy ;)
