Title: The GRACoL method
Hi Forum,
I am back after a break of about 5 years.
Early this year I completed the GRACoL Certified Expert course, I do not speak for IDEAlliance or GRACoL. I offer only my opinions, given to the best of my knowledge (which may be corrected by someone who knows different !).
The GRACoL G7 calibration method was developed over 19 different press runs, who’s goal was to match the ‘visual appearance’ of ISO 12647-2 printing. The method is of course quite different to the usual way of achieving 12647-2 by matching density and TVI (dot gain for the old fashioned).
The “GRACOL_2006Coated” data set is based on the FOGRA 39 data set – although I too have heard FOGRA 39 is being revised or edited again before release.
As mentioned in another recent post, the results of the BPIF “ISO 12647/2-2004 Printing Standards Test Day” at Heidelberg in London (where I did the G7 calibrations), showed there is only quite minor differences in the visual appearance of results from printing to both methods. The GRACoL data set used to generate the G7 calibration curves that day was an earlier data set release from GRACoL, rather than the current “2006 data set”.
On that test day, the FOGRA 39 separated cmyk images printed very well using both methods. This indicates to me that using the new GRACOL_2006 data to generate the G7 press calibration curves would further narrow the minor differences in visual appearance of ‘legacy’ cmyk colour spaces.
Lets hope the BPIF releases that report one day.
Best regards,
Dan Wilson
