"Reply" means sending a message to the originator of a message,

of the commands.
That's one interpretation. Another is that the originator did
not in fact send the mail to me, but it was mediated by the list
manager which forwarded me the mail, so "reply" should reply
to the list manager.
The usual justification for the way this list is setup is that it
is meant to reduce the chances of people accidentally replying to the
list when they meant to reply just to the poster (which can be
embarrassing), and to reduce problems with auto-responders flooding
a list by getting into a mail loop.
The main disadvantage I find with this is that it often causes confusion
and duplicate posts.
If I use "Reply all" then the poster ends up getting two copies, possibly
in two different mailboxes, and they are confused as to whether the
reply is personal or public. If they get to the personal one first,
they may then reply to me when they should really reply to the list.
When they find the post from the list and send a copy there as
well, I end up with two copies. If they "reply all" to the list,
I get three copies, and in either case I'm confused as to whether
the reply is a private or public one.
To prevent this I have to remember to edit the "Reply all" and delete
everything except the mailing list, or if I use "Reply" then I have
to edit it to change the address to be the list. Unfortunately my mailer
(and many others) simply don't have a "Reply just to the list" button.
Overall I find it a much better experience on mailing list that are
configured so that "Reply" just goes to the list.
