Thank you for your useful insight. The 'Black Level Adjustment' appears to be
a new improved LCD add-on from NEC. On page 3 of their March 7, 2006
press release they state:
" Black Level Adjustment - Allows for black levels of the LCD to more closely
resemble the levels of a CRT" (Read the full release at:

The monitor is connected to a Mac G5 via its DVi connector. Though I
assume from NEC's press release that this adjustment is available no matter
what connection is used.
Next time I'm in front of the monitor I'll give it a poke and see what the 'Black
Level Adjustment' really does and whether it improves the black level
performance. As things stand now I am not seeing the kind of shadow quality
as I do on my own (now aging) Mitsubishi DP2040u CRT. ie: the difference
between 0-1 RGB is more apparent on my CRT.
