It is crystal clear that photographers are eager to learn color management
techniques and do a good job of it. Some more than others. But the same can
also be said about prepress operators. I was going to write "experienced
scanner operators will always be in some demand" but that's not true
anymore. Because, sadly, they are becoming an extinct species and because
the source of RGB and CMYK imagery used in magazines and advertising today
has forever shifted to "digital", encompassing commercial libraries like
PhotoDisc and the likes, and commercial digital photography. So, we can
criticize or belittle photographers all we want but, soon, photographers
will be the only breed of color specialists around since very few printers
hire color management experts full-time and very few printers have
experienced color management prepress operators on staff. CM expertise
requires time and dedication to obtain, and is scarely available. Few
printers are willing to seek out the required education or training for
their exisitng staff. On the other hand, many (read a whole lot of them)
photographers *are* actively seeking out CM education and training.
