It works better than off assuming you're OK not editing the image while the
soft proof is on. That's real tough since the white of the UI doesn't
undergo the white simulation and you can't stop from adapting to that. So
basically, it's only useful in full screen mode.
Oh, when you're using the Simulate Ink Black, BPC is off.
Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink Off: This produces the relative
colorimetric intent with Black Point Compensation.
Simulate Black Ink: This produces the relative colorimetric intent
without Black Point Compensation.
Simulate Paper Color: This produces the absolute colorimetric intent
(no Black Point Compensation).
The ICC profile doesn't to squat to alter the contrast ratio of the display
however, you have to physically do this with some calibration that alters
display output behavior. Being able to actually set the contrast ratio of
the display will provide a much better soft proofing experience in my
experiences with the Artisan.
