Martin, you make a good point. I've worked in Entertainment Advertising for many years and have seen all sorts of issues along these lines. It seems to me a lot of the answer here lies with who is doing what. If the photographer is supposed to create "Final Art" and they are supplied with pretty accurate information they should be able to create the final seps without much problem.
But in the work I have done with movie posters and the like the creative work hardly stops with the photographer. If the image is to be used as an "element" in a larger composition then the image needs to be supplied in the most flexible form it can, RGB. It all depends on the particular job.
