I don't think that Andrew or I said anything of the sort.
Speaking for myself, I would say that when the photographer takes an
interest in becoming proficient at separating one's own work, he/she has an
undeniable chance to make the work come out on press the way *he/she* wants,
and not the way someone else -- possibly with little or no understanding of
the creative process -- thinks that the photographer wants it.
I believe there is a difference there. After all, when I printed my own
black & white work in the darkroom (oh, about a hundred years ago...), I
could have never expected anyone else to print it more to my satisfaction
than I did because (a) I worked hard at becoming good at printing B&W in the
darkroom, and (b) it seems obvious to me that no one else can understand and
express the spirit and intention behind my work the way I can.
In other words, the creator is the best judge of his work, at least in the
arts, if not completely so in the commercial world, where other interests
jockey for influence and economic pressure.
Regards.
