It is crystal clear that photographers are eager to learn color management
techniques and do a good job of it. Some more than others. But the same can
also be said about prepress operators...
snip...
Few
printers are willing to seek out the required education or training for
their exisitng staff. On the other hand, many (read a whole lot of them)
photographers *are* actively seeking out CM education and training.
As a photographer I really appreciate this post Roger. Yes, the pressure
on us to get with the program seems disproportional, primarily because
when things go wrong the finger points in our direction. Some
responsibility falls on us of course, but surely far more falls on those
then taking the pixels to ink dots, and they are still lagging in my
experience, but extremely talented at shifting liability. I guess this
talent can take care of the lack of the other for some time indeed. Of
course there are exceptions and I'm thrilled to work with them when I can.
The other thing I would like to point out, in the face of all these
color engineers, "educators", and designers who tell us we should learn
this stuff (it's not rocket science), and who also lay some claim to
being shooters- with few notable exceptions most of us are not
outstanding at everything. I chose years ago to try and approach being
outstanding as a photographer and continue that pursuit. Therefore I
will never be outstanding at prepress.
I may be adequate, but then I see a great deal of "adequate" photography
these days too.
I don't think there is a clear answer to the subject line, I think it
depends on the situation, I just wish the educators and academy managers
would would spend more effort on getting their clientel from the
prepress industry instead of the dazed and confused photographers. As a
group, I think we may be ahead of the others.
Quite a few annual reports I shot in the 90s received AR100 printing
awards. They were shot with film, scanned and worked and printed by
extremely skill press and prepress people. This crap about the
photographer knowing best is bull most of the time. I was always more
than thrilled with their work from my film. Since supplying digital, no
printing awards have come down the line...
