Where are all these pre-press people? There's hardly anybody on

Common misconception that only those IN the trenches can truly
understand the issues. As Henk already pointed out, there are many of
us on the "outside" that came up through the trenches. Myself, I was
pretty much pure prepress for years (17-20 years depending on where
you started counting), most of that spent as a scanner operator.
There's probably more ex-prepress folks in the color management
consulting ranks than you think. Were not all photography wanks like
Mr. Rodney (that's a joke Andrew). Frankly, I know very few prepress-
types that are allowed the time to really dig in to the nitty-gritty
of color management and, yes, making separations like those of us in
the consulting ranks. Count me as one of those who has done
everything from composed type, stripped film, made direct camera
separations and, yes, even ran a small press for a time. There may a
few clinkers among photographers, consultants and salesguys, but
don't put all of us in that basket.
